Media Center Specialist Ellen George talks to students about the latest book club selection, “We All Looked Up” by Tommy Wallach. The group meets to discuss a new book every month.

Library media specialist and book club adviser Ellen George said when selecting the book ‘We All Looked Up’ for the meeting held May 12th, she chose it because of its interesting content.

“I look for books that are just fun to read because that’s the whole point of book club. It isn’t to make you analyze a book because you do that in school,” George said. “(The club) is just a support for people who love to read and it’s meant to be more engaging and delightful than it is to teach you anything.”

George said the book sparked discussion because of the uncertain future it left both the readers and the characters contemplating.

“(The book) made me think and ask myself questions because the story had to do with an asteroid being on course to hit the planet and then realizing there was a ⅔ chance that our lives would all end because earth would self destruct,” George said. “It was asking of the small group of characters what would you do and how would you live your life in that situation.”

Senior book club member Tehya Latchman said she enjoyed reading the book because of the complex storyline and characters.

“(I liked the book) because it told the lives of teenagers and one of them had wanted to drop out and didn’t care about school, but her friend was encouraging her to stay in school because the world may end in two months,” Latchman said.

George said she felt happy with the active participation by club members during the discussion.

“I was pleasantly surprised by how many people could just jump in and start talking about what’s important to them (and) what they would do if it was their last two months on earth,” George said. “It was delightful people were open to talking about that because it feels like a sort of private part of ourselves (and) we don’t often take off our mask around people we don’t know well.”

The next book club meeting will take place after school, May 16 in the LMC.
