Eight challenging math problems every Monday, solving and discussing equations, all in preparation for the math team’s upcoming meet.

Math team adviser Kristin Johnson said she thinks the students have a lot of potential to perform well at upcoming meets.

“For the season we have a lot of talented kids,” Johnson said. “I think we have the opportunity to do phenomenal this whole year.”

Johnson said many students have excelled so far during the season but others could use some improvement.

“We had a couple of students that could have done better and that would have helped us overall,” Johnson said. “But essentially everybody is performing at the level that they’re capable of.”

Johnson said the new members have great capability and are gaining a lot of experience this season.

“We have a lot of talented freshmen that came in this year, it’s fun to have them because they can get an experience on what math team is about,” Johnson said. “Next year and the following years they will understand all of the nuances which will be huge contributing factors in the future.”

Junior Toviya Slager, member of the math team for the past three years, said he believes there is progression to be made for the next meet and the season overall.

“I want to raise my score and do better than I did at the last meet,” Slager said. “We really want to try getting 3rd place at least because we have been getting 4th place for the last two years so we want to raise our ranking.”

Slager said he anticipates improvement for this meet because the competition is in St. Louis Park.

“I hope this meet will go very well because we are on home turf, which will boost our confidence level and that will help us,” Slager said.

The meet will be held at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 23 at St. Louis Park High School held in various rooms throughout the C3 hallway.
