According to Gender Sexuality Alliance president junior Elise Bargman, the club’s leadership talked with teachers about how to be more understanding of the issues transgender people face.

“Claire O’Grady, the club’s vice president, and I mostly discussed the various LGBTQ identities, the importance of asking for students’ gender pronouns and the way teachers talk about LGBTQ issues in their classes,” Bargman said.

Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) adviser Kyle Sweeney said she believes the meeting was successful in informing teachers on how to create a better environment for transgender students.

“Since I started here, we haven’t done very much education on that topic,” Sweeney said. “If you want to create a safe space for kids, you have to know what they’re dealing with.”

French teacher Julie Conrad said she found the information from the presentation useful when it comes to her interactions with students.

“This has all been super new to me. I even learned that one of my students was transgender and I hadn’t known that,” Conrad said. “What that shows me is that sometimes, I don’t know as much about my students as I think I do.”

Sweeney said she believes the presentation generated a positive response from the audience.

“I think they were really happy to know some of the problems (that transgender people face). Often they just don’t know where to get that kind of information,” said Sweeney. “To understand what certain things mean is really helpful.”
