Review: Soundset 2017 engages fans with entertainment, chaos

Hip-hop music festival connects music-lovers across various genres

The lines were long and the crowds were massive, but the festival was well-worth the chaos.

Soundset 2017 presented an epic range of artists and genres, all labeled as hip-hop groups. With artists ranging from hip-hop star Travis Scott to up-and-comer Aminé, the all-ages event created an environment for most music fans.

The festival drew fans nationwide to the Minnesota State Fair grounds, where crowds could experience great music while enjoying classic fair foods like french fries and Sweet Martha’s Cookies.

Celebrating its 10th year anniversary, scores of fans were able to witness over 40 artists perform sets on three different stages. Tears were shed when it was announced that Lil Uzi Vert had canceled his set, however the despair was soon forgotten after AminĂ©, D.R.A.M, Ms. Lauryn Hill and Travis Scott performed impeccable sets and got the fans singing along to radio hits like “Caroline” and “Broccoli”.

Although the schedule wasn’t followed completely and several artists showed late to their sets, the crowds embraced the disorganization and went with the flow of the festival. Much to everyone’s surprise, Ms. Lauryn Hill showed only about 15 minutes after her set time and performed a complete set. The live band combined with her incredible vocals was a perfect precursor to  Travis Scott’s closing performance.

Closer to 8 p.m., a thunderstorm set over the fairgrounds, but fans were not deterred. With a double rainbow displayed in the sky above the main stage, Travis Scott ended the night with an engaging performance that left fans wanting more.

The festival offered a unique environment, fostering creative minds and drawing hip-hop fans together through love and music. All-in-all, Soundset 2017, although hectic and unruly, presented a surreal and eventful experience.
