When did you start flying planes?

I began flying in the summer of 2013, while attending the Minnesota Aviation Career Education Camp.

What type of plane do you fly?

A Cessna 152.

What got you interested in flying?

I’ve always liked travel. I went to camp this summer and we were exposed to different aspects of the aviation industry. We went to air traffic control towers and flew with Minnesota State University at Mankato. I got to fly a glider and a helicopter. We also went to different musuems and learned about security at the airport. I was interested before, but camp pushed me forward with my interest.

What is your favorite part about flying?

I love every aspect of flying, from the departure to the landing. I’ve enjoyed learning about the rules, regulations, and the aviation industry. I think it is fascinating learning about the different aviation careers, and the number of people it takes to get passengers from one airport to the next.

How often do you fly?

On average, I fly five hours a month. Each lesson includes ground school and flying time.

Do you plan on flying as career?

Yes, my dream job would be to become a corporate pilot, or commercial pilot.

What scares you most about flying?

One of the challenges that comes with flying is an awareness that minor details can impact the aircraft dramatically (weather mechanics and airport rules). Mistakes can be catastrophic. Every time I fly, I must be focused and aware of my actions.

What are some of the challenges you have faced while learning to fly?

One challenge that I encounter, is applying what I study in textbooks, to my actions in

the airplane. I am becoming more confident in following the strict procedures, and in

communication with the air traffic control

tower.

Why do you think it is valuable to learn to fly?

I think it is valuable to fly because it gives me the opportunity to do what I am passionate about. It has taught me that being disciplined and working hard, even when it’s not fun, all are taking me closer to my goal of becoming a pilot.

Where do you fly?

I fly around the Metro area, out of Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie.

How has learning to fly impacted your life?

It has taught me that through working hard, and putting forth a lot of effort, anything is possible.
