After beating Chaska in the girls’ tennis first conference match, senior captain Natalie Lorentz feels confident in her team’s ability to win the Metro West Conference.

According to Lorentz, the girls’ tennis team beat Chaska 7-0 Sept. 8 by winning all singles and doubles matches.

“Because it was a strong win, it became a huge confidence booster for us,” Lorentz said. “The win really pumped us up for the rest of the conference.”

Head coach David Breitenbucher said he felt thrilled after the win and remains extremely confident in the players’ abilities.

“It’s an exciting year for our team. I’ve been coaching for 17 years now and this is probably the best team I’ve had,” Breitenbucher said. “The girls have been spending a lot of time in getting better and it definitely shows.”

Lorentz said positivity in practice has generated much of the team’s success and she hopes the team’s determination will continue throughout the season.

“Everyone has been really motivated in practice by pushing each other and setting goals we want to achieve this season,” Lorentz said. “We also hold each other accountable and encourage everyone to put in their best effort every day.”

According to Breitenbucher, players focus on their goal of becoming Metro West Conference champions and take advantage of every minute of practice.

“I tell the girls that everyday we got to get better in practice,” Breitenbucher said. “It’s about taking baby steps and by focusing on one little thing at a time we can do great things.”

Breitenbucher said the attitude of the players contributes to recent success and he appreciates their outlook of the game.

“The girls come to practice with good attitudes and in matches they seem upbeat and positive,” Breitenbucher said. “Having that positive attitude has meant a lot for us this year.”

The team’s next match takes place at 4:15 p.m. Sept. 15 at St. Louis Park against Chanhassen.
