Two weeks before the start of school, girls’ swimming started its season. Since then, the team has competed in three meets: a relay meet, meet against Hopkins, and a meet against Chaska.

Assistant coach Amanda Forsberg said the season is going well.

“The team has been putting in a lot of hard work in the pool and also during dry land and weight sessions,” Forsberg said.

Freshman Amaya Fokuo, a swimmer on the junior varsity team, recently competed in the Hopkins meet.

“It was a really great success for us,” Fokuo said. “The season is going pretty well.”

Fokuo joined the team in seventh grade, and is now one of the many high schoolers on the girls’ swimming team.

Freshman Anna Long said that the team did really well in Chaska, despite the loss.

“We all swam really well, and I’m proud of everybody,” Long said.

Long said she appreciates Forsberg and Head Coach Joe Yaeger.

“Joe and Forsberg are really nice. They’re really good at giving us pep talks before our races and telling us what we need to do better,” Long said.

Forsberg said coaching gives her a way to connect with the girls outside of the classroom, which she enjoys.

“I enjoy watching swimmers progress not only throughout the swim season but also throughout their years on the team,” Forsberg said. “We have a lot of swimmers who join when they are in junior high and it’s fun to watch as they get faster and stronger as they get older.”

Fokuo also discussed what she learned from joining the swim team.

“It’s taught me a lot about how to be a part of a family, even when you’re not blood-related,” Fokuo said. “It’s taught me how to be supportive of everybody, even when you don’t know somebody that well.”

The next swim meet will be at 6 p.m. on Sept. 15 in Chanhassen, and there will be a home meet at 6 p.m. on Sept. 22 against Cooper.
