Girls’ golf head coach Zach Strouts passes out flyers during an informational meeting March 16. The season started March 20.

According to assistant coach Joe Yaeger, the girls’ golf informational meeting March 16 served its purpose and prepared players for the first practice.

“We talked about the schedule for the upcoming first couple weeks. We talked about the schedule at the end of the year,” Yaeger said. “We talked about how varsity and JV goes, how many girls can go at a time, what happens if you’re not on that roster.”

Yaeger said he felt pleased with the first practice March 20.

“Practice went really well. We had about 15 girls there. It went really well, a lot of good talent — even the new girls had a lot of good swings, good hand eye coordination, so it looks good so far,” Yaeger said.

Junior golfer Martha Walton said one difference this year will be the level of attention to attendance and apparel.

“They’re going to start being strict about what shoes you wear and people who don’t go to practice won’t get as much playing time,” Walton said.

Walton said because the team will consist of many newer or younger players, team bonding will play an important role in success.

“There’s a lot of new people so we for sure need to work on team bonding and getting closer,” Walton said.

According to Yaeger, despite having many new players, he feels impressed with the talent he’s witnessed so far.

“This year (we have) a little bit smaller numbers. I know we were missing a couple girls,” Yaeger said. “But the other thing was just the level of talent was a little bit higher this year. A lot of the returning girls made a lot of great strides over the off season. Even the newer girls are at a higher level than we’ve had in the past.”

Walton said she hopes for both team and individual improvement throughout the season.

“My goals for myself are to get better and play in at least three or four matches and for the team probably to teach the new people about golf and become more close as a team,” Walton said.

The first girls’ golf match takes place at 1 p.m. April 10 at Wild Marsh Golf Club against Benilde-St. Margaret’s.
