The girls’ swim team had their first conference meet against Chaska. Fierce competition arose and despite a close loss, the girls had anticipated a competitive meet and were satisfied with the results, according to junior Ellen Schempp.

According to head coach Joe Yaeger, the team expected to be very competitive against a team that placed one above them at conference last year.

“I looked forward to seeing all the girls give 110 percent, and even though we lost, we lost on our best day,” Yaeger said.

The team prepared by working hard in practice by doing fast-paced intervals, dryland and weights, according to Yaeger.

“The girls have been pushing themselves in practice to be faster,” Yaeger said. “We just started dryland and weights and will continue this into the season so we can beat other tough teams.”

Freshman Mazie Lainsbury said she anticipated a close competition and felt prepared to take on Chaska.

“Chaska is usually one of the most difficult meets of the season, we’re pretty evenly matched and we both have strong teams,” Lainsbury said. “We have been training really hard and felt as prepared as we could have been. We all swam our hardest and we’re happy with the outcome.”

Schempp said she felt the team’s hard training and positivity during the meet kept competition close.

“I think it was a very close meet. We both had an equal chance at winning and were being positive and pushing ourselves even when we were tired. We were happy with our results,” Schempp said.

According to Yaeger, the meet went well. The final score was 40-54 and many swimmers rose to the occasion.

“Personal records were broken, the 100 backstroke went well and freshman Sara Anderson had her personal best, trailing close behind Chaska by a fifth of a second,” Yaeger said.

According to Schempp, the competition was very close.

“It was such a close meet and no races were easily won or lost by either team, we all swam really well and our coaches were really happy with our races even though we didn’t win. Personally, I am glad I met my expectations,” Schempp said.

The team’s next meet takes place Sept. 24 at Park against Bloomington Kennedy.
