Synchro team prepares for second meet

After weeks of early morning and after school practices, the synchro team is about to dive into their next meet April 11.

The meet is against Hopkins and Wayzata, which junior swimmer Claire Olson said she found rather daunting.

“Wayzata is really good, and I’m hoping we can beat them,” Olson said. “But we’ve never beaten them since I’ve been on the team.”

Senior captain Maria Knudsen said this meet is more psychologically than physically difficult to prepare for.

“Competing against Wayzata is always mentally challenging because we try so hard to beat them but don’t do very well,” Knudsen said.

According to assistant coach Jessica Gust, the swimmers have been working hard on mastering the routine during their practices.

“We’ve had to spread practices because now we have routines, so we’re doing figures and routines,” Gust said. “We’ve had a lot of good progress on routines, and we’re working on specific skills identified as growth areas after the first meet.”

Olson she agrees with Gust in that the team has been improving during practice.

“Our figure work has improved since the beginning of the season and we’re in a better place than we were last year at this time,” Olson said.

Maria Knudsen said the meet important for the team to improve their skills, though does not actually determine their placement for competition.

“There’s nothing specifically special about this meet, but all meets are important because it’s one more opportunity to prepare ourselves for sections and state,” Knudsen said. “It’s a good opportunity to gauge our position against other teams.”

The meet will take place at home on April 11 from 2:30 to 7:00 P.M.
