Losing seniors causes many sports to have to rebuild each season, but reflecting on the last golf season, head coach Joe Yaeger said varsity lost close to everybody.

“I think this year there were two returning players,” Yaeger said. “There were a lot of new spots open for new players.”

Yaeger said it was the younger girls who stepped up in key situations, most recently at conference where the varsity team placed fourth.

“Golf is a nerve-racking sport and the younger girls seem to overcome it when it is needed,” Yaeger said.

According to Yaeger, sophomore Grace Feldman is one such player who has stepped up this year. As a junior varsity player last year, she is now a consistent member of the varsity team.

“Last year I played a couple varsity matches,” Feldman said. “This winter I had private lessons once a week because I wanted to get better.”

Feldman said this transition makes her feel like she has improved and motivates her to continue improving.

Feldman said she feels her improvements have benefitted the team.

“Most seniors were good last year so I feel like I filled one of those spots,” she said. “Varsity is more serious so I’ve tried to improve and I care more about my scores.”

Yaeger said Feldman, like other girls on the team, has really stepped up this year.

“She has done fantastic. She is one of our more consistent golfers,” Yaeger said. “She learns from her mistakes and doesn’t let a bad shot mess up the hole or the round.”

Yaeger said this season Feldman has been able to play with other teams’ top players and not let it affect her game.

According to Yaeger, girls have not only stepped up on the playing field, but also in practice. He mentioned Feldman as an example.

“When practicing, she has a motive of what she wants to accomplish and goes through with it,” he said. “This shows the younger girls to follow through and to not give up.”

Yaeger said he hopes the girls go out and have a good time and hit personal best scores at sections.

The girls varsity team has its first round of sections at 11:30 a.m. May 28 at Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course. The next round of sections is finals, at 7:30 a.m. June 1 at Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course.
