Junior Eva Argo practices driving last season at Brookview Driving Range.

Girls’ golf will be holding an informational meeting March 16 to discuss season practices, apparel and what registration entails, according to junior captain Carly Livingston.

Livingston said she encourages anyone interested to attend the meeting, no matter previous experience or skill.

“Golf is a sport you can play for life and it’s just a good skill to know and also it’s not a very intimidating group to be with,” Livingston said. “(Golf) is a laid-back environment and it’s really easy to be comfortable around everyone.”

Assistant coach Joe Yaeger said although the team may be relatively young this year, he feels returning players have developed their skills.

“We’re really young, new. We were competitive last year and (the players) were obviously a year younger, but this year they’re a little bit older,” Yaeger said. “I think over the summer they took a lot of things serious and I’m looking forward to their improvement and their growth in the sport.”

Yaeger said himself and head coach Zach Strouts evaluate skills to determine varsity and JV players, but this year may involve a tryout.

“As of right now we look for consistent hitting on the driving range (and) the knowledge of being able to play (for varsity),” Yaeger said. “We have not had tryouts in the past (but) we may be incorporating that depending on our numbers, but right now we don’t know.”

According to Livingston, a combination of a loss of seniors from last year and possibly wet courses could pose an obstacle for the team.

“I think a challenge might be that we lost a couple good player last year because they graduated and so maybe finding a couple new girls to play varsity — that might be a challenge,” Livingston said. “Also, I’m not sure how great of shape the courses will be in because it has been super wet this year so that might be a challenge playing outside.”

As a captain, Livingston said she looks forward to helping younger players and being a positive leader.

“I think I bring a positive attitude even when our team isn’t playing super well. I also think I bring some skill because I’ve been playing for a couple years now and I also think I bring good leadership,” Livingston said.

The informational meeting will be held after school March 16 in B337 and the golf season begins March 20.
