Through the efforts of the new head coach, girls’ varsity basketball looks to better their 7-19 record from the previous year by implementing new game strategies, according to members of the team.

The program offers open gym every Monday and Wednesday preceding tryouts in order for girls to get a better feel for the team and get to know the new ways of playing that will be implemented this year.

Senior Abby Olson said she is optimistic about the new conference and believes the extra training done during the preseason gave her a positive feeling towards the new team.

“I can already tell we have made tons of improvements from past years,” Olson said. “This year’s team is quite a bit different from previous years.”

Senior captain Autumn Ballesteros said she believes the program has received a lot of new talent and the team will be oriented differently from earlier years.

“This season as a whole program I want us to improve our record,” Ballesteros said.

A new method of play will help the flow of the team and will result in higher scoring games, according to Ballesteros.

“We are changing our style of playing, focusing more on transition rather than set plays. This works for us way better than keeping a slow, play setting game,” Ballesteros said.

Olson said she hopes the new team will fit in well with the conference and end the season more successfully than the last.

“We will have our ups and downs, some games being better than others, but I think we have a good shot at improving our record with this new conference,” Olson said.
