According to head coach David Breitenbucher, the girls’ tennis team was awarded the fifth seed out of 16 teams in its Section 6AA.

“Considering we’re in one of the toughest sections in the whole state it’s really good to get that high of a seed,” Breitenbucher said. “I’ve been coaching this team for 17 to 18 years and it’s the highest seed we have ever gotten.”

Senior captain Natalie Lorentz said she is proud of the team’s achievements and wants the team to recognize its success.

“It’s important for the girls to remember that this is our last shot. They have all worked extremely hard to get to where they are,” Lorentz said. “We earned this seed and it’s important to represent our school well.”

Lorentz said the team’s goal is to go far in its Section and playing its biggest competitors.

“I think our overall team goal is to make it to the semifinals for Sections, We’d really like to come up against Benilde or Hopkins so we can try to beat them again,” Lorentz said.

Breitenbucher said the team has focused on getting more aggressive in doubles matches to prepare for Sections.

“During the regular season we lost to Benilde and I felt like their doubles teams were more aggressive at the net than we were,” Breitenbucher said. “For a good two weeks we have been working on drills at the net and only letting the ball bounce once.”

According to Breitenbucher, the team’s wants to stay positive, be aggressive and work as a team.

“Our goal is to play the best we can,” Breitenbucher said. “As long as we go out there as a team and we’re focused and ready to go, hopefully everything will take care of itself.”

Girls’ tennis won its first Section game against DeLaSalle 7-0 and plays its second Section game against Benilde at 2 p.m. Sept. 5 at St. Louis Park.
