Quiz Bowl adviser finds passion

Peter Dangerfield enjoys competition

Science teacher Peter Dangerfield has always had a passion for school related competition. Now, he has the opportunity to foster the same love for students through a mutual joy for quiz bowl.

“I always enjoyed academic competitions all the things like Science Olympiad, and the math team and those competitions,” Dangerfield said.

Dangerfield said his enjoyment of knowledge based events, and his love for competition inspired him to sign up to be the club adviser.

“I was pretty excited when I came here and found out there was actually a vacated position,” Dangerfield said. “They said we quizbowl_17073497_cb89865578a0af096c6895c4dc2ca44759cb454fneed a quiz bowl adviser and it was something I contemplated and I said, sure I’ll go ahead and do it,”

Dangerfield said being involved in Quiz Bowl allows him to bond with students outside of the classroom and lets him compete in a fun and educational way.

“It’s great, it gives me another opportunity to connect with students outside of the 8:20-3:10 time frame of school and to connect with other students I don’t have in class, and I love competing,” Dangerfield said.

To prepare for competition, Dangerfield said he encourages team members to absorb as much knowledge as they can.

“Just hearing, reading, learning, and just taking in the information and knowledge as best you can from whatever sources might be (beneficial when it comes to competition),” Dangerfield said.

According to Dangerfield, the team’s size is always changing because students are involved in many activities.

“We just got some kids who just finished up with fall athletics, we’ll lose a kid or two with winter athletics, and then in the spring. So it fluctuates, and that’s ok,” Dangerfield said. “So if anyone out there is interested, we haven’t stopped. You can join Quiz Bowl at any time you want to.”

Dangerfield said there are no official captains but some seniors have assumed a leadership role.

“What usually ends up happening is seniors kind of start taking over that role just because they have had another two, three years on the other classmen, for just exposure to facts, exposure to information. This year we’ve got Nick Kasic and Will Poulter who are the upperclassmen,” Dangerfield said.

The next Quiz Bowl meeting is Tuesday October 18 at 3:30 in room A301.
