Natural Helpers listen to presentation on how the group will organize peer counseling in their previous meeting location Nov. 15.

According to senior Natural Helper leader Anna Gleason, the club has not lived up to her expectations for the year.

“(This year) really hasn’t gone as well as we hoped,” Gleason said. “We haven’t helped as many people as we would have liked to. Some of the people who are in it aren’t as committed as we’d hoped. So I’m hoping that’ll change next year.”

Adviser Andrew Carlson said Natural Helpers is considering re-interviewing members for next year and plans to do a review of the year with leaders of Natural Helpers in order to improve the club.

“I will be sitting down with the six or seven leaders of Natural Helpers this year and going over the pros and cons of what went well this year, what could be improved on,” Carlson said. “I’m trying to solicit some actual member feedback, versus just what I think went well and what didn’t go well.”

According to Carlson, the club will be working toward more organized leadership for next year.

“(We’re looking at) how to better divide up the tasks for the leadership, who’s in charge of what for next year,” Carlson said.

Carlson said he seeks to increase the number of advisers for Natural Helpers in the future.

“We’re also looking at adding more teacher advisers to the group,” Carlson said. “Right now it’s Megan Custer, Jill Merkle, and me who are doing the leadership stuff. We think if we maybe get more staff members involved that it might run a little bit smoother next year.”

Gleason said she is unaware whether Allison Luskey, who was previously an adviser for Natural Helpers, will be returning as an adviser for next year.

“Last year (Luskey) said she was going to come back the year after, but I don’t know if she actually is or not, but I think Mr. Carlson’s going to stay with it,” Gleason said.

According to Carlson, Natural Helpers aims to improve its marketing for next year.

“We’re going to do a little bit more planning for how we’re going to market (Natural Helpers) for next year,” Carlson said. “We had good feedback when we had the beginning of the year club fair that was in the gym when the freshmen came. Our plan this year was to clean (a case on the second floor) up, put some pictures up so you can identify people by face and, again, it just never came to fruition this year.”

Gleason said students should join Natural Helpers because of the positive community it embodies.

“I think it’s a good community, and the people who do show up are often pretty close,” Gleason said. “We’re all friends and stuff like that. It’s just a good community to be a part of.”

Luskey declined to comment.
