‘Zoolander 2’ brings laughs, not logic

Sequel features old cast, fresh jokes

Almost 15 years after the release of “Zoolander,” Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson reprise their roles as fashion icons Derek Zoolander and Hansel — he’s so hot right now — and provide a fresh, ridiculous and lovable version of their older, less cool selves.

Among Stiller and Wilson, old faces return to the “Zoolander” screen, including Will Ferrell as the over-the-top, possibly insane Jacobim Mugatu, Christine Taylor as Stiller’s wife and of course the legendary Billy Zane as the legendary Billy Zane.

The sequel also provides a plethora of fresh characters and celebrity cameos, some of which, like Susan Sarandon, make the audience wonder what in the world is going on.

Just like the first film, “Zoolander 2” pokes fun at the fashion industry, commenting on the over-exaggerated trends, the stereotypical models and the desire of youth. Though the sequel features the same lead actors and some of the same jokes as the first one — orange mocha frappuccinos, anyone? — the plot line is even more ridiculous and unbelievable, making fans of the first film extremely happy, but newcomers confused and unsatisfied.

Although the film may lack logic and reason, it’s exactly what the first film set out to do. “Zoolander 2” isn’t made to make sense or to make the audience think differently about a certain topic — it’s made to bring laughs and smiles to the crowd. At the same time, the fashion industry is just as ridiculous and over-the-top as one would imagine it to be, which “Zoolander 2” captures perfectly.

While the sequel may lack the cult-film aspect the first one brought, it provides the fresh and ludicrous jokes and scenes needed to satisfy any “Zoolander” fanatic: from Mugatu’s brilliant, yet bizarre, plan to rule the fashion industry, to Zoolander’s lovable, yet idiotic, ways he captures his son’s love.

Don’t expect “Zoolander 2” to make any sense or to bring tears to the audience’s eyes, but expect a lot of laughs and enough memorable quotes to last a lifetime — at least until another “Zoolander” film is made.
