When I went to my first concert ever, this past week, all expectations were off the table. Bruno Mars’s music was a common sound in my house for as long as I can remember. Now that I am older, having the chance to see him singing all of the songs that I grew up with was unimaginable.

The concert began with opener Charlie Wilson, also known as ‘Uncle Charlie.’ With background dancers on either side, he brought energy to the stage the moment he walked on. Beginning his performance with one of many hit songs “There Goes My Baby,” he provided both young and old audience members a chance to let loose and have fun. A great pairing to Mars’s iconic style, Wilson brought along classic quick costume changes, light up jackets, and enough audience participation to get the whole crowd laughing out loud. Most importantly, we were ready for the main event.

His segment ended with an amazing rendition of “Charlie, Last Name, Wilson” which lead to both screaming and dancing all around. My friends and I were amazed despite not knowing his music, and Wilson’s performing character made all of us want to sing along as best we could. Both his incredible music abilities and amazing charisma created the perfect ambiance to lead into Mars’s grand entrance.

After waiting for what seemed like forever, it was finally time for the main event. Bruno and his background group of ‘Hooligans’ jumped onto the stage ready to please the crowd and get us all dancing by the end of the show. He began by singing “Finesse” and other songs from his most recent album “24K Magic.” With bright colorful lights and dance moves that seemed impossible to do, even audience interaction with competitions of stage left versus stage right.

Bruno Mars is known for his fascinating musical talent and wide range in any of his songs. His isolated rendition of “When I Was Your Man” proved his abilities even more so. By giving spotlight time to his background musicians, it was evident that Mars cared so much about both his craft and those who are behind the scenes. This addition created a great audience to musician connection as if you truly knew each member.

The concert came to a close with the heartwarming song “Just The Way You Are” from “Doo-Wops & Hooligans.” A song near and dear to my heart was the perfect way to give thanks to such a supportive crowd. Mars’s consistent energy and talent stands him apart from other artists performances, even more so with an encore of “Uptown Funk” after the concert ended. He demonstrated the ability to shine a light on his own abilities, not needing extra add-ons. His voice, dancing and kind personality stole the show.

Leaving the show, I felt more than satisfied with a concert experience than I ever imagined. The 24K Magic Tour was a once and a lifetime opportunity, filled with lasting memories and unbelievable talent that will be remembered.
