As DECA adviser Sally Adams reflects on the recent trip to New York, she said she believes taking students to a new environment proved beneficial because of the new experiences it created.
“They learn a lot about the different careers (and) they got to see Manhattan. Traveling is always an educational experience,” Adams said. “They got to network and meet other DECA students.”
Senior Kyle Hedblom recounts what he learned from the recent trip.
“We met with a marketing company that helped teach us how to sell to consumers, and (that) taught us what it is like to create one-on-one relationships with your clients and people you are trying to sell to,” Hedblom said. “(They) taught us how to build your business from the ground up and how to work in a high-up position.”
According Adams, the trip to New York was a national conference sponsored by DECA for students to learn and explore business.
“It is a career conference where they learn about all kinds of careers including hospitality, travel and tourism, finance, fashion merchandising and sports and entertainment marketing. Students can explore careers and use Manhattan as their classroom,” Adams said.
Junior Maddie Hoffman said this conference interested her more than previous trips DECA has taken.
“We had a lot of DECA seminar, and most of them were about fashion, which was really cool because on the last conference we went to nothing really peaked my interest,” Hoffman said. “But this was all about fashion, fashion marketing, what is appropriate for business casual, stuff like that.”
According to junior Krista Morhauser, students were able to hear from past club members about the benefits of sticking with the club.
“We had people from Berkeley come talk to us about DECA and how DECA really prepares them and how people in that college that did DECA really succeed. They really encouraged us to stay with DECA because it really prepares us for the future,” Morhauser said.
