On May 13, Park’s girls lacrosse team squared up against Bloomington Jefferson in a regular-season matchup. The game got away from Park quickly, as the scoreboard showed 12-4. Park didn’t give up but still lost 19-9 against the Jefferson team.
Senior and captain Kate Grimm said the team performed decently, even though they lost to a very good Jefferson team. She said she personally could’ve played more aggressively.
“We did really well because Jefferson is a really hard team (to beat). Our defense was really good and we were talking the whole time,” Kate Grimm said. “I think I did pretty good. I could have been a little bit more aggressive, but I think overall I did really well for this hard team.”
Assistant coach Maya Contreras said she felt the girls played well when matched up against a challenging opponent.
“I feel like this was a really good game for our girls. This was going to be one of our more challenging games, but the way our girls adapted and we’re able to um focus on their skills,” Contreras said. “They really pulled through this game and the coaching staff is really, really happy and proud of it.”
Sophomore Lola Grimm said she thought it was a good game. She said looking past the score, she improved on her foul trouble.
“It was a good game, especially against Jefferson, who’s a tough competitor,” Lola Grimm said. “I think I did well, and I especially did well at cleaning up my fouls.”
Contreras said a big concept the team could work on was communication back and forth between each other, but she was still happy with the outcome.
“There’s always room for improvement, especially with the game of lacrosse and how rapidly it’s evolving,” Contreras said. “(For) the next game, (we need to have better) communication. (We need to) communicate within the first couple minutes of the game. I think it would be something we can work on, but other than that, we’re just really happy with the turnout.”
Lola Grimm said the team needs to work on more of the basics and fundamentals in order for the team to improve..
“Going to our next game, we just want to work on transitions and clears,” Lola Grimm said. “Also just focusing on running our plays.”
Kate Grimm said she’s starting to feel sad about the end of her senior season, but believes the team can finish strong.
“I’m sad because it’s my senior year and I’m not going to be playing in college, but I think that we’re going to do great,” Kate Grimm said.
With it being her first year helping coach at Park, Contreras said she has been happy to see the growth of the team throughout the year.
“This was my first year with St. Louis Park, so I’m proud of them. I have seen an enormous amount of growth with both JV and Varsity from the beginning of the year to now. I didn’t get to see how they played last year against any of these teams, so just being proud of them with where they are now and where they are going to go,” Contreras said.
Lola Grimm said she feels the team has been getting better as the season goes on. She said the team is looking towards sections.
“I’m feeling that we have some tough things ahead, but we’ve been getting better and better as the season goes on. The plan is to just work on possession and running our plays, working on both offense and defense,” Lola Grimm said.
Park’s next game is at St. Paul/Two Rivers at 7 p.m. May 15 at Two Rivers High School.
