Jump to the humane society for hoppy hour

A social hour with rabbits

Junior Rachel Potter said she was unsure what type of rabbit she wanted until she visited Hoppy Hour at a local Humane Society.

“I fell in love with rabbits after watching how social and fun loving they were,” she said. “I was shocked to see the variety of rabbits. There were huge fuzzy white bunnies, flemish giants which are the size of medium cats, black and white spotted rabbits and everything in between.”

The Humane Society of Golden Valley takes part in Hoppy Hour, organized by the Minnesota Companion Rabbit Society, every other Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m.

Barbara Kelley, coordinator of Hoppy Hour, said she and others from the Humane Society realized dogs were given their own time to socialize so they thought the rabbits deserved a time of their own.

“It was an idea of a couple of us who were playing with our agility rabbits and thought dogs had Yappy Hour, so rabbits should have Hoppy Hour,” Kelley said.

According to Kelley, Hoppy Hour is a time and place for the rabbits to play with one another or with people.

Although many of the rabbits already live together, Kelley said it’s interesting to see how they interact with the other rabbits at Hoppy Hour.

“Many of the rabbits are bounded to one another, live with another, but have a specific rabbit they are friends with here,” she said.

Anyone can come to Hoppy Hour for free and those who wish to bring their rabbit to the event pay a fee of $3 per rabbit.

Potter said she thinks the event is worth the fee because the proceeds help the Humane Society and other rabbit organizations, and her rabbit finds much enjoyment.

“For that price which goes towards the humane society and non-profit rabbit organizations,  she could play with tunnels, boxes, toys, and other rabbits. It was fun seeing rabbits grooming Tara and her jumping and doing her rabbit happy dance. It was also good to know the money was going towards a good cause,” she said.

Whether thinking of owning a rabbit or just fascinated with animals, Hoppy Hour is open to everyone. The next Hoppy Hour will take place Feb. 16.
