Students packed the back rows of a District Centra

Students packed the back rows of a District Central boardroom March 13 to listen in on the superintendent election. They had come to protest the possible election of Dr. Teri Staloch, who left Prior Lake School District after it faced a racism scandal that made national news.
The election finalists were Dr. Teri Staloch, former superintendent at Prior Lake, and Dr. Carla Hines, a former associate superintendent at Eden Prairie. Both finalists were set to answer a series of questions sent in from community members, and Staloch was up first. While answering a question about equity in schools, Staloch was interrupted by Park senior Calvin Zimmerman.
“You’ve never advanced anything,” Zimmerman said, standing from his seat. “You’ve only contributed to racism.”

Softball took their second victory in a row to start the season with a 7-4 win over Minneapolis Southwest. The team was able to get on the board early, putting up seven runs in only the first three innings, and finished it off with strong pitching. The team has had a positive start to the season with consecutive wins and they will have a tournament this weekend where they can showcase their skill early in the season.

On March 14, the Minneapolis City Council overrode Mayor Jacob Frey’s decision to veto the edict that would require a minimum wage for ride-sharing workers. Uber and Lyft both said they would be pulling out of service in Minneapolis if this were to happen. The ordinance was initially set to begin May 1, but the council unanimously decided to delay the ordinance to July. Governor Tim Walz is currently working towards a compromise “to increase rideshare driver pay but keep Uber and Lyft operating in the Twin Cities.”

While the 2023-2024 school year is inching closer to wrapping up, current juniors are starting to prepare for their senior year. For many, this includes taking the ACT, and for many students, it was their first time preparing for and participating in this test. As many colleges have become test optional due to the pandemic, students are adapting to those who are starting to require it again.

As of right now, the House has passed H.R.7521 which is a proposal that would remove Americans’ obtaining ownership of the mobile app TikTok on one’s phone. The bill still has yet to pass the Senate and be put to be signed into law by President Biden, but this bill is hypocritical and has widespread implications.

The auditorium at Park broke open March 21 with its debut performance of “Newsies,” which Park’s choir has been working on for around three months. The show was musically directed by choir teacher John Myszowski and stage-directed by Lil Zumberge.
Sophomore Shepherd Cox, who played Henry, said the musical was striking because of its message, which is that teenagers’ voices matter.

While students have many tough choices to make, one of the largest is the choice of PSEO (Post Secondary Enrollment Options). This opportunity allows students as juniors or seniors to take college courses either in-person or remotely. As a sophomore, the choice to do PSEO the following year is offered for the first time, and the decision to take it is often tough.

The Jan. 18 events at Park brought temporary changes that enhanced the security and altered student activities during the school day. These temporary changes included more increased police and staff presence at Park, hallway escorts instead of hallway passes and an absence of open lunch for seniors. Since then, Park has gone back to its normal rules, and it is questionable whether the temporary implementation of enhanced security has had any effect at Park.

Junior year is infamous as being the most challeng

Junior year is infamous as being the most challenging for students. Students may also tackle Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes along with additional challenges like the ACT and plans for the future. With biology being a required course at Park, students are being forced to adjust to biology grading policies being altered midway through the year. Contradicting the student handbook policies, teachers have discarded formative policies in favor of having all formative and assignment points coming from quiz scores. Tests and quizzes, already controversial pieces of academics, have now become 100% of a student’s grade in biology.

Sports are the most popular extracurriculars among high-schoolers. In Minnesota, some of the most popular high school sports are intense, high-contact activities, such as hockey, football, soccer and lacrosse. These activities inherently put students at risk of injury, a significant concern being head trauma, specifically. Year after year, sports come out to be one of the top causes of concussions in young people, sometimes the top cause. Along with the risks that come with contact sports, there also comes benefits.

20,000 fans from across Minnesota, the U.S. and the world congregated at Theodore Wirth Park for the Nordic ski Stifel Loppet Cup races this past weekend. The first World Cup in the U.S. since 2001, it included a skate sprint race on Saturday, Feb. 17, and a 10k skate race on Sunday, Feb. 18. The Loppet Foundation also hosted a “ski fun day” on Monday, Feb. 19, where spectators could meet U.S. Ski Team skiers and ski the sprint course.

Starting as early as September, Park seniors have been receiving early admission decisions from colleges. Many colleges offer early decision and early action with deadlines in late fall, with admission decisions coming out in January and February. However, when a senior gets into college early, it can sometimes lead them quickly into a senior slide.

Park girls Nordic battled hard at the state meet on Feb. 14 and 15 and ended up in fifth overall with a total of 16 teams. The team was ranked third going into the two day race that was held at Giants Ridge in St. Louis County.
