Female comedians recall what it’s like to grow up as a girl

To a little girl, her diary is the most sacred and private part of her life; for nobody else’s eyes but her own. In the “Girls Only Comedy” variety show,  hilarity ensues when two comedians perform based on what they wrote in their childhood diaries.

“Girls Only Comedy” is a touring show that aims to bring out the little girl in the audience through the comedic representation of what it’s like to grow up and experience your body for the first time.

Linda Klein, co-creator of “Girls Only Comedy,” said she got the idea for the variety show when she found her childhood diary.

“I read my old diary and thought that this is something that people could truly laugh at,” Klein said.

Some of the topics touched on during the show are periods, dealing with bratty friends, boys and much more.

Senior Cora Iverson said she thinks this show is an entertaining way for girls to relate to each other.

“It’s good for girls to learn from these women and relate to what they’re talking about,” Iverson said.

Klein said the show takes the audience through the ups and downs of childhood into early adulthood in a light and comical way.

“The show’s goal is to bring the feeling of nostalgia back to the audience members,” Klein said.

Iverson said the show could help young girls who are still figuring out their own bodies and becoming comfortable with themselves.

“Younger girls are still experiencing who they are, older girls are more comfortable with themselves and are more comfortable talking about how their body works,” Iverson said.

Performances will be held Mar. 12-Apr. 19 at the Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis. Tickets are $19.50 for students and can be purchased at hennepintheatretrust.org.
