Science teacher Jenny Magdal hangs a poster in her classroom in anticipation of Free Comic Book Day, an event which she looks forward to every year.

“It’s fun to see all the people that we know and they just make a really fun atmosphere,” Magdal said.

According to Deborah Moreland, advertising and promotions manager for Free Comic Book Day, millions across the world will participate in the celebration May 2. It is an annual event where anyone can go to local comic book shops and get free comic books. Participating stores near St. Louis Park include Comic Book College, Dreamers Games and Big Brain Comics.

Freshman Thomas Rainey said he will be one of the many people waiting to receive comic books, without needing a penny. He said he thinks students should attend the event because it is free and helps out new artists.

“You get to see some up-and-coming artists and they get to get noticed. It’s just overall a pretty nice thing to have happen,” Rainey said. “By going you can help support the artist and some of them really need help, so get out and go to it.”

According to Moreland, 5.6 million comic books are sold each year around the world at local comic book stores. She said there are 50 different designated comics to choose from on the day of the event. Some of the comic books available come from television shows such as Pokemon, Spongebob and Bob’s Burgers.

“Students should go there if they want to learn more about their favorite characters from TV shows or movies,” Moreland said.

Sophomore Tre Givens said he is attending Free Comic Book Day because he loves the superheroes he reads about in comic books.

“I would go to get back in touch with my childhood,” Givens said.

Magdal said she loves to read comic books because they incorporate art along with an interesting story.

“It’s like reading a book, but there’s beautiful art as well,” Magdal said. “It doesn’t have to be all superheroes, it can be some really in-depth mystery stories.”

Magdal said she encourages everyone to attend Free Comic Book Day because of the incredible talent of the artists and the great overall experience.

“If (students) are at all interested in art or writing, it’s a great way for them to start finding some different avenues of those habits,” Magdal said.
