As we move from fall to wintertime, fashion trends change with the cold weather. Over the years, different trends begin to shift in and out of style. So what’s “in” this winter season? This year, although there have been many new fashion trends, there are also many returning from past years.

As snow begins to fall, and autumn colors turn to winter colors, clothes do the same. The trendy colors shift from greens, browns and tans to whites, blues and blacks. Yet some other colors such as green and brown inevitably come back for the holiday season.

Layers are key for the winter season. Besides keeping in heat, they can add color and shape to outfits in many ways. One of the most notable outer layers for the winter season has been in trend for a while — the puffer jacket. Puffer jackets are warm, comfortable and stylish. Being very versatile, puffer jackets have been popular during the winter as a casual jacket to wear for when it’s cold but not necessarily 30 below.

Puffers come in a huge range of colors, the most popular being black and white. Outdoorsy brands like Columbia and The North Face have the most popular puffers, but puffers can really be found anywhere.

Work jackets have been blowing up this year as well, most notably the Carhartt brand. These heavy-duty, high-quality and good looking work jackets, give a vintage look, and can be layered nicely over pretty much anything.

Many types of vests have come back in style this season. Vests are good pieces for layering on sweatshirts, shirts, jackets and more. Vests come with even more versatility and variation — puffer vests, sweater vests, fleece vests, etc. — all of which have relatively different uses and style applications.

Sweaters are another warm layer that adds much more variation to an outfit. Knit sweaters of any color can be worn fancily or casually. Graphic or plain, sweaters and sweatshirts are very comfortable, and an obvious choice for many people. Additionally, full zip-up and quarter-zip sweaters are some of the biggest trends right now. Fleece sweaters and jackets do a good job at insulating and producing a nice winter look.

Sweatpants are a favorite for a lot of people. They’re comfy and can be worn with almost anything. Sweatpants will always be an easy and sure way to go. Sweatpants come in every color and can fit and be styled in a wide variety of ways. Sweatpants are also one of if not the warmest options for pants.

Winter and fall alike, jeans and cargo pants have been very popular this year. Jeans are a go-with-everything type of pants and come in a range of colors and styles. Even some lined jeans for the winter are a really nice way to stay warm and still be stylish. Cargos, though a little less warm, can come in an even wider range of colors and are often a good solution if an outfit is too plain. Cargos also have several pockets that can fulfill many peoples’ needs, on top of being stylish.

Accessorizing with beanies, different shoes or boots to match a whole outfit together has already been very popular for a while. Beanies are trendy and convenient, and can add both warmth and style for the winter. Shoes are also very important in the winter to really pull an outfit together.

Neutral colors and outfit-complementing colors are very popular for winter shoes. Nike, New Balance and Adidas shoes take up a lot of the trending shoe market, with SB Dunks, Air Maxes and Air Force Ones as usual. New Balance has recently been making a comeback with the 990s and 550s becoming popular. Adidas Superstars additionally became more popular as a neutral, interesting-looking shoe.

Outside, almost any boots work this winter season. For stylish boots, Uggs have been very popular as usual — platformed Uggs, especially. To stay dry and warm, one must look no further than Columbia, Keen and Sorel boots.

Trends will always be changing but for now this is a good overview of what’s in style, and what’ll keep you warm for the winter.
