Released March 20, “Project Hail Mary” is a sci-fi movie based on the book written by Andy Weir in 2021. The movie is action-packed with lots of humor while also focusing on friendship and emotions. This was the kind of movie that had everyone in the theater either laughing or completely silent and locked in watching the screen.
“Project Hail Mary” follows scientist Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), who is on a mission to save Earth from a microbe that is dimming the sun, which threatens to kill everyone on Earth over time. While in space, Grace finds Rocky (voiced by James Ortiz), an alien who is also trying to solve the crisis of the solar-eating microbe. They work together and build a strong bond along the way. While the movie was very eventful, there was also the heartwarming friendship between Rocky and Grace that made the movie very emotional at times.
The casting in this movie was overall really good. Ryan Gosling was on screen for pretty much the entire movie and played his part very well. He was able to perfectly capture all the emotions of the movie, as well as balance the humorous aspects of the movie with the more serious ones. James Ortiz was also really great at voicing Rocky, the alien, making it very realistic. Sandra Hüller played the character Eva Stratt, perfecting the strict, boss energy that was needed to set the scene.
There wasn’t much that disappointed me in this movie. The soundtrack, costumes and cinematography were all very well put together and worked seamlessly to create an awesome movie. The costumes were limited due to the movie being set in space, but the t-shirts and space suits picked were great and matched the tone of the movie. Something that was really great in this movie was the soundtrack. Each song played matched whatever scene perfectly, whether it was emotional, suspenseful or heroic. It made it feel like you were experiencing the events right along with the characters and really made you lean forward in your seat, excited to see what would happen next. The cinematography in this movie was superb. The filming made it truly feel like you were in another galaxy, and the lighting really helped the viewer focus on the important elements and details of the movie. The cinematography was truly one of the best elements of this movie.
The script of the movie made the two and a half hour movie feel short just because of how much it captivated and entertained me. It was very suspenseful while also including lots of jokes to lighten the mood. I never felt bored while watching this movie because there was always an exciting part to be interested in, and there were many jokes and details to focus on. I enjoyed the timeline of this movie and how it went back and forth between the past and the present. It created new viewpoints and interesting factors between each timeline jump. The ending of the movie also wrapped up the movie in an excellent way and gave good closure.
Overall, I would give this movie five stars, and it is definitely a movie that I would watch again or recommend to other people. It kept me entertained the whole time, had a great storyline, great cinematography and great acting. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes sci-fi and action-packed movies.
