Released on March 26, “Something very bad is going to happen” is a horror mini-series released by and exclusively available on Netflix. Created by Haley Z. Boston and produced by Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, who created “Stranger Things,” some aspects are very apparent in this new series. “Something very bad is going to happen” is a captivating and thrilling series if you’re looking for some edge-of-the-seat entertainment.
The series starts out with the main character Rachel (Camila Morrone) and her fiance Nicky (Adam DiMarco) starting their roadtrip to Nicky’s family cabin for their wedding. Right off the bat there’s some freaky foreshadowing and flashes of what’s to come later in the series. The fast and upbeat pace at the beginning left me frazzled and confused about what exactly was going on. I think it was a great choice on the creator and producers’ part because of how well it connects the beginning and end of the series. The series is full of unexpected plot twists and unraveling mysteries that for a minute made it seem like a mystery series. The combination of horror and mystery made this series super easy to watch and stay engaged with.
The casting was amazing, and each person they cast did such a great job embodying their roles and producing just the right vibes to contribute to a spooky, bewitching atmosphere. All of Nicky’s family members had some type of eerie mystery feel and look to them, which I believe to be entirely purposeful and done splendidly. One of the characters who I feel really contributed a lot to the overall unraveling of the plot was Nicky’s older brother, Jules (Jeff Wilbusch). Jules was a vital character to the storyline, and his actions as well as involvement with Rachel, had me feeling like he was being set up to play an even bigger role. Jule’s wife, Nell (Karla Crome) was also one of my favorite characters to see. At first, I was unsure about her, but as the series progressed, she became someone Rachel could rely on. Nell also brought a sense of security to the viewers because of her normalcy as it highlighted some of the mysteries going on with Nicky’s family.
The script combined just the right amounts of paranormal, horror and drama. There were so many unexpected plot twists and the amount of foreshadowing and setup at the beginning of the series made everything flow so smoothly. I have genuinely never felt as confused and drawn in by a series before and I’m personally not a huge fan of series but this one was special for sure. There was definitely a lot of back and forth but I loved the character development throughout the series and how nothing seemed rushed or like a random inclusion. Every small decision and every detail was thoughtfully placed for a specific purpose.
While the costumes were nothing special, I did love Portia’s (Gus Birney) dresses. They were always sparkly and elegant, perfectly suiting her character while showing off her family’s status. Her outfits also contrasted heavily with Rachel’s, which I thought was interesting but also intriguing. While Rachel was almost always in dark, casual clothing, Portia was in bright, formal clothing, really showing the differences between them as characters. Everyone else’ s outfits were normal and average without anything super noticeable or eye-catching.
Overall, this series is definitely one I would recommend, especially to anyone seeking a cure to boredom. This was one of the only shows where I could not peel my eyes away from the screen, even with some of the jump scares. If you’re in the market to watch something a little scary but super entertaining, give this series a chance.
