Award show switches things up

This year was the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards, which is an event that honors American television and film production and their success. This year, the Globe’s overall viewership drastically increased by 65% compared to last year’s show. With this increased amount of viewership, one would think the show would be good. However, the Golden Globes this year was a mess, and not in the way it usually is.

For starters, the Golden Globes award show is known for celebrities getting a little intoxicated at the shows and just having a great time while accepting awards and making jokes. That is usually the case, until the 2021 show, where the show was accused of racism, corruption and was made a mockery of. The HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press association) vowed to change their ways on how they would perform their award show in the coming years.

This year, as the new and improved Golden Globes award show comes on, it seems different than the last few years because it was boring. Comedian Jo Koy was the host this year, which was a smart move because he is a very good comedian. However, for some reason, this year he felt way out of place around all the high powered celebrities and couldn’t get around the crowd. He choked up by making jokes about how they showed less clips of Taylor Swift than the NFL does, and overall hosted so terribly that he was forced to acknowledge his mess-up.

Their whole new system of the award show is bland. They can’t say the things they used to and they can’t make the same jokes they used to, and that’s why people were disappointed with this year’s show. It almost seems like people come to this award show for a laugh instead of actually paying attention to who won or not.

The show is known for its goofy yet serious moments to award some of the biggest American shows and movies. Now, granted, they did do that this year, but it was so off-beat compared to the years prior that it made the show upsetting.

Aside from all of these new features of the Golden Globes, the important part of the show is the awards, and boy did they provide. Christopher Nolan, director of arguably the best movie of 2023 — “Oppenheimer” — scoring a total of eight nominations and five awards. Another big hit was the movie “Barbie,” with a total of nine nominations and two award wins. Now for TV shows, one leader in that category was the show “Succession” with a total of 18 nominations and nine total wins. However, that doesn’t compare to the show “Crown,” with a total of 23 nominations and eight award winners. Personally, I think all of these awards are deserved especially for “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” because of how successful they were with marketing of the movie and the overall sales.

Overall, I think the Golden Globes had some great awards to give out, and the show wasn’t too bad. I do think there could be some tweaks here and there, but that could be said for anything, and I think it’s a good step for this organization coming off of the last few years. However, the show is known for its goofy aspect, and that’s what drew people into the show. If they said they have changed their ways about everything prior, they should maybe creep back into their original ways and see what that does for them.
