At the most recent Latino Student Association meeting, sophomore Sabrina Garcia and her fellow group members got creative in preparation for the Cinco de Mayo celebration.

Garcia said members interested in participating signed up to lead different parts of the celebration.

“We all got to do arts and crafts and brainstorm ideas and sign up for activities we want to do,” Garcia said. “I signed up for piñata and dancing.”

Adviser Daniel Perez said what stood out to him most about the meeting, which took place April 26, was the interest students expressed in planning the celebration.

“I would say the highlight was people’s involvement and engagement throughout the process,” Perez said.

Perez said what he most looks forward to in the Cinco de Mayo celebration is the opportunity students will have to show the staff and student body what it means to be Latino.

“For me, it’s actually seeing it happen and seeing the Latino students take ownership over this event and also being able to share about themselves, their culture, with the larger student body and staff,” Perez said.

Garcia said she hopes for the celebration to educate and inform everyone who attends.

“(My goal is) having people seeing what our culture is like and kind of experiencing what it’s like to eat the food we eat, dress the way we dress, play games we usually play.”

The Cinco de Mayo Celebration will take place during all four lunches May 5, outside if weather permits and in the field house in the case of rain.
