Kara Mueller works on career fair materials. The Career EXPO will take place April 26 during advisory.

Sophomore Brendon Johnson said he hopes to learn about jobs in the technology field at tomorrow’s career fair.

“Lots of hands-on things is what I like to look for,” Johnson said.

Career and college coordinator/CTE director Kara Mueller said the Career EXPO allows students to explore future careers and opportunities.

“We bring in guests from all over the metro area, so they can talk to them in all of our different career fields,” Mueller said. “They can learn about a career, learn about what it takes to get into that career, possibly network (and build) up contacts of who they can reach out to in the future.”

Mueller said students should gain an understanding of their career options and interact with people in various occupations.

“You don’t know what you don’t know,” Mueller said. “For (students) to have the ability to walk in and very comfortably with no expectations other than learning, talk to somebody about what it’s like to actually work in that career or actually touch or see an example, then they start thinking about (their) connection with education to (their) career.”

Mueller said all freshmen, sophomores and juniors will attend the career EXPO April 26 during advisory. She said seniors have the option to attend as one of several activity choices.

“Seniors get special breakup sessions. They get the department of economic development updates on hot careers, they get personal financial planning and then the third one is college professor 101,” Mueller said. “This year what we’re going to do is offer them the opportunity to attend the career fair (too).”

Johnson said the career fair is beneficial for students.

“(It’s important for students) to see what jobs are out there, knowing that they can fit into a job,” Johnson said.

Mueller said college students will be at the EXPO to answer questions.

“I have 10 University of Minnesota students coming in to help students come up and say what it’s like to go through the college application process,” Mueller said.

Mueller said students should look into careers they’re not familiar with.

“I really want students to be relaxed but take advantage of their time,” Mueller said. “Just relax, come in and really, really self reflect and think for yourself as far as there’s something I might be interested in.”

Mueller said more than 75 careers will be represented at the career EXPO. It will take place April 26 during advisory.
