With only three people representing Park, senior Sten Johnson, junior Ben Takata and sophomore Daniel Takata won first place for men’s épée at the 2014 Fencing State Championships Feb. 22-23 at Holy Family Catholic Academy.

Placing 17th out of 41 competitors individually, Daniel said Park’s result shocked and pleased him.

“I was surprised because there were a lot of other good schools that were competing,” Daniel said. “I was proud that the three people from St. Louis Park won.”

Johnson also finished first at the St. Paul Academy Invitational Jan. 8.

For Johnson, winning the State Tournament does not mean he can rest.

“After a fun high school season we are looking forward to two big tournaments coming in the spring,” Johnson said. “Both are large, competitive tournaments and we are excited to compete.”

Épée is one of three fencing styles, which also include sabre and foil. Épée uses a different sword and has different rules.
