Artsy annual magazine coming soon

Few people have the courage to put their creative work out for their peers to see. But one group at the High School does that.

36 Arts is in its fourth year of publishing a magazine filled with student visual art, short stories and poetry. The magazine, sold at the end of the school year, displays not only artistic work by members of the group, but by other students wanting to make their art known.

Sophomore Danny Campos’ poetry was published in the 2013 magazine.

“It let me express my feelings in a subtle way, and at the same time being able to share them with everybody,” Campos said.

The group meets each week to plan for the magazine, create posters, and organize student events. These include art shares and poetry slams, the most recent of which took place on April 21 and was a combination of poetry and art. These events are options for the students to showcase their crafts in a supportive environment.

Chris Nordmark, adviser for 36 Arts, said he recommends the group for students who have a hard time sharing original work on their own.

“It’s a safe place to have that outlet, and present (your art) somewhere,” Nordmark said. “It’s hard to be like, ‘Hey, look at this thing I drew.’”

Junior Rachel Potter said she has learned to appreciate new styles of art and has become more comfortable trying them herself through being a part of 36 Arts.

“I’ve had fun making posters, writing poetry, and seeing a lot of talented people’s work,” said Potter.

According to Nordmark, some of the students are nervous about sharing their art prior to joining the group.

“(This group) is a way to make your art known,” Nordmark said. “If (a prospective member) is interested in having that outlet for their artistic voice, then this would definitely be the place for them.”
