Recent meet results in A team success

The quiz bowl team aims to continue on their road to the state tournament after a recent success at the Dec. 11 meet.

Adviser Bruce McLean said he was happy overall with the team’s results. The A team finished 3-1, with the B and C teams following 2-2 and 1-3 respectively.

“The reason this (meet) was good was because we played 2 of the 4 matches against A teams and we played pretty good teams the whole night,” McLean said.

The A team’s success was particularly impressive due to the tough competition they faced, according to McLean.

“Usually the second night of the three nights we go to Eden Prairie is the hardest night because that is when they match up A teams against A teams,” McLean said. “To go 3-1 was real good for us, that was sort of what I was hoping for.”

Senior and A team member Elliot Schwartz said he agrees with McLean and also considers their competition as including some of the state powerhouses.

“There are difficult teams in our conference, so I think losing some (matches) is to be expected,” Schwartz said.

According to Schwartz, one factor that prevented them from going 4-0 was the breadth of the questions asked.

“The A team is not well balanced,” Schwartz said. “We need someone that knows science, but we have all of the other areas covered though.”

McLean said there is nothing specific the team can do to prepare for their final meet before the state tournament.

“Practice is more just asking questions, putting things out there, and just having fun with it,” McLean said.

The team’s next meet is Jan. 22 at Eden Prairie. According to McLean, the team has a good chance of qualifying for state if they do well at this final meet.

“Right now we are 6-2,” McLean said. “If we go 3-1 or 4-0 on the next night, we have a pretty good chance of qualifying for the state tournament in Burnsville.”
