New club to educate on film

Students create club to explore all aspects of movies

On his way to IB Film class, junior Garrett Wells and a few of his friends had an idea of creating a club that would be similar to a book club but for movies.

The film club is a new club created by juniors that will involve movie watching and reflecting about them afterwards.

Wells said the film club will discuss different movies once a week to ensure students are learning while watching them.

“We will watch movies and after were done watching them we talk about them, the artistic direction of them and all of the symbolism in them,” Wells said.  “It’s a way for people who really enjoy the craft of filmmaking to watch and analyze movies with other people.”

Adviser Peter Redmond said his ambition for the club is to help students analyze and increase their knowledge on films.

“My goal is for students to have a better understanding of movies,” Redmond said. “We want to talk about the different aspects of movies and give people an opportunity to see some movies that they may not have actually watched on their own to broaden their understanding.”

According to Redmond, the film club will be enjoyable to students who have an interest in different types of films or who like to watch movies in general.

“We will eventually have a schedule with movies on it to give it a little structure,” Redmond said. “Hopefully everybody will have enough time to watch the entire movie after school and we will discuss it.”

Redmond said his idea for the club is to expand student’s perspective on films so they understand all angles of the movies they watch.

“The purpose is to bring together a group of students to watch movies and have an in depth and meaningful discussion and choose movies that students may not have thought to watch,” Redmond said.

Wells said he believes students would want to join the club because film production is becoming more popular in today’s society.

“Film is becoming such a main medium for expression because everyone watches movies so I think it’s just a great way to watch really great movies and have fun while doing so,” Wells said.

Junior Lexie McChesney said she is interested in joining the film club because it’s a different way to express peoples opinion about movies.

“People have the same thing in common, to come together and discuss different interpretations of different movies,” McChesney said. “I think that the club can open a lot of windows of ideas and its a cool way to connect with people.”

To join, talk to either Peter Redmond or Charlie Berg, Ethan Fogel, Polina Pekurovsky, Albie Sher, Joe Villano and Garrett Wells.
