After placing third in their division Jan. 22, the quiz bowl team will once again send the A team to participate in the state competition.

The A team went 3-1 at the tournament, securing third place in the West division and the opportunity to compete at the Burnsville state tournament Feb. 19.

According to adviser Bruce McLean, the top four teams in each division qualify for the state tournament.

“We always want to try to qualify for the Burnsville tournament and we did, so that is kind of our goal,” McLean said.

McLean said he was proud of the team’s performance at the tournament because they met his expectations of how they would hold up against the competition.

“They beat the teams they should have beat, then they lost to Blake’s A team so we played well,” McLean said.

Senior and A team member Spencer Anderson said the success was a great way to finish the season on a high note.

“It was the last normal season tournament so it is good that we won most of our games and that we are moving on,” Anderson said.

Anderson said the win was not easy to achieve and he feels fortunate to participate in the state tournament.

“I am happy because we made it to state and not all of the teams get to do that,” Anderson said. “It is pretty hard to get to state. The only teams that we lost to are the teams that are ahead of us so I guess it is kind of funny that we made it this far.”

The B and C teams, however, did not fare as well. The B team went 1-3 at the tournament, while the C team faced four losses.

Senior and B team member Gabrielle Martinez said despite the loss, she is happy for her fellow teammates who will continue on in the season.

“They can only send one team and so I definitely think they should use our strongest players to represent our school in a positive light,” Martinez said.

As a new member to quiz bowl, Martinez said she enjoyed her first season of quiz bowl.

“I had never done it before and I thought it was really interesting,” Martinez said. “I am pretty satisfied with it even though we did didn’t do super awesome.”

In addition to the state tournament, quiz bowl members are also participating in various tournaments on Saturdays that are less competitive. These tournaments will take place Feb. 21 at Roseville, Feb. 28 at Armstrong and Mar. 7 at Eastview.

Even though the B and C teams’ seasons are formally over, these members are still welcome to come to practice and participate in the Saturday tournaments, according to McLean.

“[The purpose] is just to play the games and try to win the tournaments,” McLean said.

The state tournament will take place Feb. 19 at Burnsville High School.
