Johnson said she formed the club so students could do things like knitting, crocheting and other similar crafts before school. Though few students have joined so far, she hopes it will continue to grow as students begin to notice it.

Johnson said she received inspiration for the club from her pleasant memories of elementary school, in Brooklyn Park.

“In third grade, I had a teacher that would let us come in and knit during lunch. I liked it a lot and that was what made me form this [club],” Johnson said.

Johnson said she feels that along with participating in the club to complete items of clothing, students could use the club to try out knitting or crocheting, as a means to relax before school.

“They (crafts) can be a good way to help students relieve stress from school”, Johnson said.

The club is also a place for school employees, who have made up the majority of the clubs attendance so far, according to Johnson. With the knitting and crochet needles, yarn and thread available, the club can be a place for teachers or other school employees to spend a short time before school.

Special education teacher Kathryn Bartee has attended the club at both of its sessions and said that she enjoyed it.

“Some of us adults are rusty at it (knitting/crocheting), but we hope to get back into it”, Bartee said.

As the year progresses, the club will continue to meet, hoping to increase their numbers. Students looking to participate in the group can find the club between 8:00 a.m. and 8:40 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the learning lab.
