When junior Hannah Ellingson saw the National Honors Society plans to volunteer at Westwood Nature Center’s Halloween party, she remembered dressing up as a Dalmation.

She said she looks forward to volunteering at the Halloween party the first time this year with National Honors Society (NHS).

“I myself went to Westwood Nature Center Halloween Party every year growing up, so when I saw the sign up to volunteer I thought it would be great to give back way to give back to the community,” Ellingson said. “I want to help set up the party and get everything ready so kids could enjoy it as much as I did when I was their age.”

National Honor SoceityThis year will be known as their 34th annual Halloween party during MEA weekend.

Adviser Jenny Magdal said NHS will volunteer at the Halloween party this year. She said it will include many games and activities for elementary kids to take part in.

“There will also be clean up opportunities at the nature center. It’s not a requirement for the NHS to volunteer because of student’s college visits and students may be traveling during MEA weekend, but Westwood Nature Center relies heavily on NHS to provide service,” Magdal said.

Senior and secretary Jessica Schmidt said she volunteered last year and plans on doing it again this year.

“It was a very fun project to be part of,” Schmidt said. “It was great to be able to interact with kids in a fun environment.”

Senior and historian Kate Duerksen said she enjoyed the event last year and loves seeing the kids in their costumes.

“I really liked seeing how much fun the kids were having and getting to see all their cute Halloween costumes,” Duerksen said. “There were things like the duck pond, face painting and acorn toss.”

The event takes place on Oct. 16-17 at Westwood Nature Center.
