Freshman Cailey Hansen-Mahoney was a member of the Science Olympiad club in middle school. This year, she said she looks forward conducting experiments and learning more about science.

“I’m excited to be with my friends and learn more and do cool things,” Mahoney said

Club advisor Jenny Magdal said she is eager to work with students who love all different kinds of science.

“This is my 11th year with the team I started it up when I started working here and it is so much fun,” Magdal said

During the Oct.6 meeting, students experimented with creating projectiles and launching candy corn down the hallway. The goal was to launch the candy corn the farthest, Mahoney said.

“We had four rubber bands, three toilet paper holders and a piece of ribbon,” Mahoney said

The members split up into two groups to design and construct their projectiles. The only instructions were to use the materials given to launch a piece of candy corn as far as they could, Mahoney said.

“We had two toilet paper rolls with rubber bands around them, connected by the ribbon. Then we put the candy corn in and pulled back,” Mahoney said

Magdal said these kinds of experiments are common at the beginning of the year. They allow students to bond and work together as a team.

The next meeting will take place Nov. 11 after school in room A308.
