When thinking of the medical field, many students only picture a doctor, nurse or surgeon, said Medical Educational Development Club adviser Casie Budolfson.

Budolfson said she hopes to change this perspective with professional speakers from different medical fields.

“I think students don’t know about a lot of careers besides the general ones, and I’m hoping having these speakers come in will broaden their horizons,” Budolfson said.

Two recruiters and one coordinator from Be The Match, a nonprofit organization that provides bone marrow and umbilical cord transplants, came to Park Oct. 29 to talk to Medical Educational Development (MED) club about their organization, foundation and jobs.

According to Be The Match coordinator Margeaux Minea, Be The Match provided 6,300 bone marrow transplants in 2014 and have jobs ranging from IT specialists to marketing and advertising.

Junior Ellen Schempp said she enjoys listening to speakers because it gives her and other students different views on the medical profession and the jobs available.

“It really gives everyone a chance, who is interested in the medical field, to explore career options outside the typical doctor or nursing job,” Schempp said.

Schemp also said she likes getting to share her passion for medicine with others.

“I like that everyone has the same interests and that we can have the opportunity to learn and have professionals come in to talk with us,” Schempp said.

Budolfson said MED club’s next meeting has not been decided but they plan on having a nurse anesthetist speak soon.
