Roots and Shoots works to get St. Louis Park an environmental report card through an organization called iMatter, according to junior Roots and Shoots club member Anna Roethler.

“What we’re trying to do is work with this program, create a report card and bring it to the city council and show them how environmentally friendly they are,” Roethler said. “From there we can suggest improvements and make it better.”

iMatter is a nation-wide organization that provides a starting point for youth to get involved with environmental issues in their community, according to executive director Larry Kraft.

“We’re starting pilots in about a dozen cities across the country,” Kraft said. “This is the beginning of this campaign. It’s called iMatter Now and we’re in pilot mode so I’m really excited to be doing it in St. Louis Park.”

Kraft said he feels excited to be able to work locally.

“I live in St. Louis Park, my kids go to Peter Hobart,” Kraft said. “It’s really exciting to be working with these kids here.”roots and shoots

iMatter Now involves the city getting a report card and the youth stepping up through adult mentors.

“The campaign is about mentoring and helping students stand up and demand action on climate change in their city,” Kraft said. “There’s a report card, and there’s a petition in the form of a Declaration of Independence from fossil fuels to hold the adults and the leaders of the community accountable.”

Roethler said she feels excited to see students taking action.

“It should be good,” Roethler said. “We’re getting more involved and some people are stepping up to take leadership roles.”

The next meeting takes place 8 a.m. Dec. 15 in room A315.
