With help from students, English teacher and Echowan adviser Julianne Herbert’s classroom now has three new additions, according to Herbert.

According to Echowan photo editor and senior Hannah Heitzinger, the classroom now has a microwave, a hot water heater for tea and a coffee maker.

“It’s exciting for us because now we can bring all sorts of food that we couldn’t eat before for lunch,” Heitzinger said.

According to Herbert, the old Echowan publication room had a full-service kitchen.

“We had everything but a stove,” Herbert said. “We had a full-size fridge, a sink and a microwave.”

Herbert said the idea to make these new additions to her classroom came from her senior English class.

“We thought it would be awfully nice if we could just sit around and read literature with coffee and tea,” Herbert said. “So we got them and the students use them all the time.”

According to Heitzinger, a student brought in the microwave, but the hot water heater and coffee maker are new.

“Mrs. Herbert had her students donate two dollars each for the coffee maker,” Heitzinger said. “Herbert’s English class are the people who mainly donated the money.”

Herbert said the new items don’t distract her students because she said her students know how to get up without distracting others.

“It’s nice for people to get up and pour themselves a cup of tea in the middle of class,” Herbert said.
