Sophomore Megan Perkins laces up her tennis shoes to get ready for the Turkey Trot, and with her twin brother sophomore Collin Perkins standing beside her, they begin to run.

Megan and Collin are both members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) club. Megan said they spend a lot of time playing sports and dedicating themselves to their faith.

Megan said she started to play basketball because of her siblings.

“The first sport I ever played was basketball,” Megan said. “When I saw my older sister Addy and Collin play, it made me want to join a team too because I felt like I was missing out on something.”

Megan said although she and her brother do not play basketball anymore, the sport helped them realize what God can do in their activities.

“God has always been that positive support at times when I don’t believe in myself,” Megan said. “Sometimes when I don’t have people there supporting me, I know that he is there watching me and cheering me on.”

fcaCollin said that God’s teachings help him in not only sports, but in life.

“I care more about God’s teachings than God, personally,” Collin said. “I see God as someone who is there for me whenever I need him and, at the same time, his teachings will be there as well.”

Collin said his membership in the FCA club allows him to learn more about God.

“The club helps me understand (God) better and it provides a different learning environment to talk about God,” Collin said. “I don’t know a lot of things about God so the FCA helps me be around a group of less judgmental people.”

Megan said she heard about the FCA from her old basketball coach, Tim Sension, and decided to join last year because the club needed more members.

“The club has helped strengthen my relationship with God,” Megan said. “Since I’m not able to go to church every Sunday or every Wednesday, I’m able to be in a different environment and still learn God’s teachings.”

The next FCA meeting takes place at 8 a.m. April 5 in the old gym.
