Sophomores Cole Nugteren and David Prohofsky begin to work on the basics of building a robot. The robotics club meets at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesdays in room C350.

When junior Anna Kasper heard about the robotics club, she felt excited to join because she loves to build robots.

“I joined the robotics club because I heard about it, and I thought it would be cool to try out and build some stuff,” Kasper said.

Senior robotics club president George Hare said meetings include training members on the skills of robotics.

“We are going through training modules, which gives some of our new members and some of our trained members a chance to expand their skills and get to know how to do various things with regards to the team,” Hare said.

Senior Katie Steiner said the club has been splitting into teams and accomplishing tasks depending on what team they are in.

“So far this season we’ve split up into teams we expect to be working on during the season and each of the teams have been led by the team leader to figure out the software or hardware they will be using during the season,” Steiner said. “Each week, the four teams split up to accomplish a task designed by their captain.”

According to Hare, the club will receive their first challenge in January.

“Robotics runs a little differently than a sport or activity,” Hare said. “We have no idea what we are doing until our season starts. The game changes every year, so Jan. 3, the first Saturday in January, is when we get that challenge.”

Hare said the club contains club leaders and leaders in training who are responsible for teaching members all of the skills necessary for competitions.

“We are engaging all of our student leaders and students leaders in training,” Hare said. “(When training members), we have a lead person and we have the lead person in training. Lead person is usually a senior and the lead person in training is sophomore preferably but we have some juniors.”

Steiner said she strives to create a productive atmosphere for the newcomers in the club.

“My personal goal this year is to create a positive working environment for the juniors, underclassmen and especially the new recruits, so they stick with it and can carry on the robotics team, and continue to make a unique community of people that would never otherwise have interacted,” Steiner said.

Hare said the goal for the robotics club is to enter into two competitions this year.

“Things that we are expanding to is our competitions. We usually only have one with several games inside of it,” Hare said. “We are looking to get into two competitions and double our chances to win.”

The robotics club meets at 3:15 p.m every Tuesday in room C

350, according to Hare.
