Students gear up for Sadie’s
The Sadie Hawkins dance will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Double Tree Hotel near the West End in St. Louis Park. Park’s DECA members put on the dance for students. DECA officer senior Josie Verhasselt said the dance is different from the rest of the school dances, which makes it entertaining.
“Sadie’s is special mainly because the girls get to ask the boys, but also because you can dress as a couple and be able to express yourself even more than you normally do,” Verhasselt said.
The theme is “traditional,” but many couples choose to coordinate outfits as an alternative.
Verhasselt and fellow DECA members help the community in planning the dance as well, running a simultaneous food drive by asking dance-goers to bring one canned food item to benefit the St. Louis Park Emergency Program when they purchase a ticket.

Debate team advanced to finals in local tournament
Senior Richard Shmikler won the Lakeville South High School debate tournament Oct. 13 in Lakeville. He was undefeated in the entire tournament, awarded first place and was top speaker.
“The judges voted 3-0 in the final round making me undefeated, and I was awarded top speaker to top it off,” he said.
Junior Dana Councilman also advanced to the top nine in the tournament.
“I was eliminated in a 4-1 judges decision, but I was really happy that I made it to the semifinals” Councilman said.
Assistant coach Peter Redmond was pleased with the teams’ performance in the tournament. “It always feels good to see the team do well.” Redmond said.
