Fundraiser hosted to raise money for American Heart Association

Hearts are on the minds of many as Valentine’s Day approaches, and a community service project provides an outlet to help out the hearts in need.

During all four lunches this week, suckers and t-shirts will be available for students to purchase. The suckers will be $1 and the t-shirts $10. The money goes directly to the American Heart Association, a group  whose mission is to build healthier lives to prevent heart-related illnesses. A member from the American Heart Association came to Park to teach about their cause.

Senior Rebecca Lian heard them speak and decided she and her community service group would help out.

“The American Heart Association came in to talk to us, and I felt that I wanted to help out in some way,” Lian said. “We wanted to advertise for American Heart Association and increase awareness.”

Senior Kenzie Hendlin, another member in the group, agrees with Lian. She wanted to do something to help the American Heart Association too, and said volunteering and helping out is a great feeling.
“I feel like a better person when I volunteer and it gives me good karma,” Hendlin said.
Junior Jeff Babcock plans to buy a sucker on Valentine’s day to show his support.
“I think it’s a great idea to help out the American Heart Association,” Babcock said. “It’s also nice to see students getting involved in the community.”
Junior Noah Kupritz already bought a sucker and said he thinks the cause is very important.
“I hope to help people with heart-related issues,” Kupritz said. “I think it’s a good non-profit program and I want to support (it).”
Lian, Hendlin and the rest of their group, said they hope other students like Babcock and Kupritz want to help out and support their cause.
