The Southwest light rail project was a finalist for the North American Project of the Year award at the CG/LA Infrastructure national summit because of its superior engineering and construction plans.

A press release from Southwest Light Rail Transit (LRT) stated that the project was in the running for the award because of it’s exceptional detail on engineering plans.

Laura Baenen, communications manager for Southwest light rail, said the reason the engineering is especially unusual and difficult is because of the many pieces involved.

“The Southwest LRT Project is particularly challenging due to the nearly 40 different structures, an extraordinary amount compared to the region’s other LRT projects,” Baenen said.

The summit was held Oct. 28-30 in Washington, D. C.
