The superintendent publicly announced his recommendation of current interim principal Scott Meyers as next year’s principal May 7, one of the final steps in the principal selection process.

According to Robert Metz, district superintendent, his decision was the last step in the principal search process before the school board’s final decision at their meeting May 11.

“(The principal search) has gone very well. I’m happy with how we did it,” Metz said. “The process brought us two finalists who both could have done the job well. (Meyers) is the best fit for the school at the time.”

Metz said he looked at all the comments and input submitted by students, staff and community members involved in the search before making his final decision.

“He’s the right kind of person in that the school, students and community are his top priorities,” Metz said. “He’s a good listener and has a long history here.”

Junior Tyra Grieger said she was happy with the announcement that Metz recommended Meyers as principal because she has known Meyers since seventh grade.

“He used to be my science teacher and he’s a great leader,” Grieger said. “He knows how to treat all students equally.”

Grieger said she participated in the principal search by giving the district her input about the qualities she wanted to see in next year’s principal.

Sara Thompson, director of communications and community relations, said Meyers accepted the position before the announcement was made but the official decision is pending school board action.

“The school board will hear the announcement from Metz and then the board members will vote,” Thompson said.

Thompson said there was a meeting before school May 7 to inform the teachers about the decision and a public announcement at the end of the school day to notify students.

“(The announcement) was made to inform stakeholders,” Thompson said. “Parents and the greater community will be informed later today and tomorrow.”

Scott Meyers, current interim principal, said he is excited for the opportunity to move forward with a clear picture of his goals.

“I learned a lot as interim (principal) this year. I will be able to continue to build upon that and move into a planning and action mode,” Meyers said. “Some of the most valuable information I got as interim was building relationships with the people I’ll be working with.”

Before serving as interim principal, Meyers was assistant principal which, he said, did not give him insight into certain aspects of the principal’s job.

“As interim, I got to look at these (aspects) and see what I should maintain and look for areas of improvement,” Meyers said. “I want to have (the school) progressing in a positive direction.”
