When Laura King, 10th grade counselor, noticed the success of freshmen in their classes due to  the blocking system, the high school and the administration worked together to bring it to sophomore year.

King said the school is experimenting with the blocking system for 10th graders for the first time.

Untitled InfographicThe teachers will have a common core group of students and they will meet once a day during their prep and discuss who’s doing well and students who maybe needs a little help so that students don’t fall through the cracks,” King said.

According to King, the 10th grade blocking system shows many similiarities to the 9th grade one, but it isn’t as clustered.

“The difference is that the 10th grade students in the block will see the same group of teachers, but the group of the students will not move similar cluster from class to class like the freshmen,” King said. “Sophomore block will be more dispersed with the students but still consistent with teacher.”

Sophomore Chloee Thompson said she really liked the fact administration created a new blocking system.

“Personally I like it better because there is a better chance to meet new people and get out of your comfort zone,” Thompson said.

King said she hopes the new blocking system will continue the academic success found with the 9th grade blocking system.

“What inspired us is that we see the 9th grade program working, students are passing more, more successful and more engaged in school,” King said. “We want our student to continue that path to success.”
