When did you start watching “My Little Pony” and how was your experience?

It would probably be about three years ago, freshman year. A friend of mine sent me this video in Google chat. He said watch this and I thought it was a joke, but I watched the entire thing and by the end of it I was like “this is really good.” Then I kept watching. I still thought it was a joke so I didn’t bring it up. One day he said ‘did you like it?’ That is when I realized that he actually liked it too and wasn’t just showing it to me as a joke.

Do you know any bronies in the community and do you do anything with them in the brony community?

I know a lot of people at the high school. Outside the high school, I don’t really know that many. I also know some people through the Facebook page.

Why do you like “My Little Pony” more than other shows?

I’m not going to say it’s the best show on TV, but it is a really good show. It makes me smile when I watch it. I think it is also childish in many ways and just fun to watch. It is funny at times, teaches life lessons and good morals, and just makes people feel good.

How are you involved in the brony community?

I have gone to meet-ups at the Mall of America and I am going to BronyCon this year. The other bronies are usually really great. They’re nice and it’s really easy to talk with them because we have something in common.

What episode do you think was the most influential in your life?

I’m going to have to go with the first episode because it was the first I saw. It was the one that made me like the show. It introduced and developed the characters rather nicely and had some interesting villains. Saying it simply, it just got me hooked.

According to a study by Edwards and Redden in 2012, 88 percent of the “My Little Pony” viewers over 18 were men. Why do you think this is the case?

I’m not really sure. If I had to guess it would be because on the internet. From my knowledge, the vast majority of people that go on 4chan and Reddit are men, and those are the people that were interested in “My Little Pony.”  After that, why it did not spread to females; I don’t know.

What would you tell people about the show if they haven’t seen it?

I think every Brony goes through a phase where they want everybody to watch the show, but I already got over that. I understand that not everybody likes the show. So nowadays I don’t try to get people to watch the show, but if there is someone I know who I think will like it, I will just be like, ‘you should watch this.’ Then eventually they take it serious and decide to watch it themselves.

How much more is there to being a brony than just watching the show?

You can call yourself a brony and just watch the show, but you can also call yourself a brony and not watch the show at all. I have this friend who doesn’t watch any of the shows, but reads a lot of the fan fiction and participates in the community and she is just as much of a brony as the rest of us. There is definitely more to being a brony than just watching the show. I mean, the fandom is absolutely spectacular. It is only comparable to Star Trek and Doctor Who in size.

Which pony do you think most resembles you and why?

Twilight Sparkle for sure. I see myself as very nerdy and she is the nerdy one in the group. She loves books and reading and I’m not so much about that, but I love learning and so does she. I think every person who watches the show can find a pony who is similar to them.
