Not many students spend their free time partaking in medieval fencing classes, but according to sophomore Dovid Borg, he is an exception.

Borg first got into swordplay before moving to Minnesota, crediting his passion for fantasy action games like “The Legend of Zelda”.

“It was primarily games like Zelda that first got me into swordplay,” Borg said. “I also liked the idea of having a cool sword to swing around.”

Borg started a month long medieval fencing program this fall, featuring a variety of medieval weaponry, including axes and traditional swords.

While he enjoys the whole concept of swordplay, Borg said he also enjoys the mental challenge of fencing, along with the use of weapons in general.

“I enjoy the action mixed with strategy of knowing when to react, or to strike, parry, or to counter,” Borg said. “I like the idea of having this cool sword to swing around in the air.”

Along with attending these after school fencing classes, Borg also likes to engage in swordplay with his friends during his free time. According to Borg, he and his friends will engage in swordplay no matter the weather.

“There was this time when my friend and I were outside in the pouring rain, just playing with plastic swords for hours,” Borg said.

Although Borg uses swordplay as a way of entertainment and relaxation, he also participates in other after school activities outside of fencing.

“I’m going to try out for theater in a couple of days, along with tennis in the spring. I’m also going to be doing a police academy training soon,” Borg said.

While Borg said he has enjoyed fencing for some time, he said he cannot wait to participate in the medieval fencing class and continue his love for the activity.

“I just love swordplay in general,” Borg said.
